The Project
This online Research Collaboratory is an outcome of UNESCO - IUGS - IGCP 521 - INQUA 501 Work Group 12 ~ A Geoinformation System to consolidate and make accessible cutting edge research from across disciplines in real-time.

The Collaboratory is an open Web-database GIS application which allows scientists from around the world to preview, publish and share research data on the Black Sea corridor. The goal is to provide a comprehensive retrospective which forms a broad foundation for contemporary environmental monitoring, observation and education.

Presented at the Third Annual Plenary of IGCP 521 and Joint Meeting of IGCP 521 and 421 in Gelendzhik, Russia, in September 2007, the Black Sea Collaboratory sets a precedent for the world by being both international and interdisciplinary in scope.

You are invited to review the WG12 Summary Presentation (16mb PDF) from the INQUA 501 Seventh Plenary meeting at Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University on August 27th, 2011. The final plenary in Odessa resulted in four main initiatives:
  • To continue the Black Sea Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory to 2020 and beyond
  • To actively reach out to the global research community for relevant data and pertinant information from all disciplines in order to identify blind spots, challenge existing hypotheses, and develop an ever more comprehensive perspective on the Caspian-Black Sea-Mediterranean Corridor
  • To initiate a new 5 year research program of the subject area spanning 0-780 ky BP
  • To embark on a collaborative publication outlining important research and discoveries in the past decade
